☀️ Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors, holidays, and community activities. However, the warmer months also bring health risks that can be prevented with a little preparation and awareness.
Sun Protection
Australia’s UV levels are high, even on cloudy days. Protect your skin by using a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, wearing hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing, and seeking shade during peak UV hours (10am–4pm). Regular skin checks are also important to detect early signs of skin cancer.

Heat Safety
Heatwaves can be dangerous, especially for young children, older adults, and those with chronic medical conditions. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, and keep homes cool using fans, air-conditioning, or cool showers. Be alert for symptoms of heat exhaustion such as dizziness, nausea, headache, or confusion, and seek medical help early to prevent heat stroke.

Food Safety
Food spoils more quickly in hot weather. Keep cold foods refrigerated, avoid leaving food out for extended periods, and ensure meats and seafood are well cooked. When picnicking or travelling, use insulated coolers with ice packs to prevent foodborne illness.

Beach and Water Safety
If heading to the beach, always swim between the flags, supervise children closely, and be mindful of rips and changing conditions. Apply water-resistant sunscreen regularly and stay hydrated, even when swimming.

Planning a Summer Holiday
If you’re travelling, especially overseas, plan ahead. Check if vaccinations or boosters are recommended, ensure regular medications are packed, and consider travel health advice specific to your destination. A pre-travel consultation with your GP can help keep your holiday safe and enjoyable.
