10–17 August 2026 marks Kidney Action Week, an annual campaign raising awareness about kidney disease and the importance of early detection.
At Glenorie District Medical Centre, we're supporting Kidney Action Week by encouraging our community to learn about their kidney health and, if they're at risk, speak with their GP about a simple kidney health check.
Why Kidney Health Matters
Kidney disease is common, yet many people don't realise they have it. In fact, up to 90% of kidney function can be lost before symptoms develop, making early detection especially important.
If you're at increased risk, having your kidney health checked every 1–2 years can help identify problems early, when treatment and lifestyle changes are often most effective.
Are You at Risk?
You may be at higher risk of kidney disease if you:
· Have high blood pressure, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease
· Are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and aged 18 years or older
· Are significantly overweight or living with obesity
· Have previously experienced acute kidney problems or have a family history of kidney disease
· Smoke, vape, or have smoked or vaped in the past
· Are aged 60 years or older
What Does a Kidney Health Check Involve?
A kidney health check is simple and includes three parts:
· Blood pressure measurement
· Blood test
· Urine test
These tests help your GP assess how well your kidneys are working and identify any early signs of kidney disease.
Book Your Kidney Health Check
If you think you may be at risk, we encourage you to book an appointment with one of our GPs to discuss whether a kidney health check is appropriate for you.
